It is that time of year again, when kids get sick. During the end of September is when kids start to show signs of whatever bugs are going around at school, here in Minnesota. Of course a bad cold or flu can keep a student out of class and cause them to fall behind. Our director, Sonja, has a few tips to help get your child back up and running.

These tips, she has gained from her own experience and the experience of our parents who have had kids fall sick during the school year. A really bad flu or cold can last 2 weeks, and during that time, tests and important class projects can take place. A poor performance on an important test can mean spending the rest of the semester playing catch up. So here are a few tips for you:

Chicken noodle soup. Yes this does work! Add in a little bit of cayenne pepper, garlic and oregano to help speed up the healing process. Take your favorite chicken noodle soup or if you have the time, make it from scratch. Then add in crushed garlic and dried oregano with just a dash of cayenne pepper. It has a lot of flavor and helps kids get better faster.

Herbal tea with lemon, honey and a Halls cough drop. Sometimes kids don’t like green tea, but there are many berry flavored teas on the market today. Even some teas that are for flu and cold. Find a flavor your kids will like and add a little bit of lemon juice, honey and a Halls cough drop to the tea. The cough drop will dissolve after a while, stir it around to help it dissolve faster. This is great for helping kids who have a sore throat.

If teas are not your child’s thing, then try zinc cough drops. These are great at helping to improve a sore throat and can been found in GNC, many co-ops and even many supermarkets today. If you don’t have the time for tea, then these zinc drops are a great alternative, especially if your child is just starting a sore throat, this may help them keep going.

One important thing to do is to avoid sugar when a child is sick. Sugar can actually feed some bacteria, helping to prolong the illness. As much as kids may want to have juice when sick. limiting juice while sick can actually help shorten the illness. There are alternatives to juice to get the vitamin C needed.

These simple times can help your child get better faster.

In a recent survey by Kaplen, 82% of universities said they do look at Facebook during the admissions process of a student. With that number of schools looking, chances are, your school of choice is one of them. So what does this mean to you and your chances of getting into the school of your choice?

Just like for people looking for a job, high school students who want to go to college, need to be aware of what their online presence looks like. Not every school looks at this the same way though. Some schools use Facebook as an outreach program to attract students to their school. There is nothing wrong with that and may help you get exposed to a school that you might be interested in but otherwise may not have heard of.

However, some admissions officers admitted to looking at online profiles not just on Facebook but on other sites as well or doing a Google search on students. It is impossible to not be biased by what they find. So if you want to portray yourself as the strong student with great potential and yet your online presence shows you sitting around watching TV and talking about pizza, that will influence the admissions officer’s decision.

Some simple steps you can do are to make sure your Facebook settings are set to Friends Only. That way if you want to still be a kid, at least your friends will be the only one’s seeing it. Also, do a Google search on yourself and see what comes up and if you can, remove anything you don’t want showing up. Set up a Google alert on your name, it’s free and simple to do.

The admissions process is one of increased competition for students. Make sure your online presence is help you get into the school of your choice.

There is a misconception about what the word education really means. The dictionary doesn’t help as it defines it incorrectly. Most dictionaries say that to educate is to impart knowledge, but that’s not the root of the word and it is important to know what the root of education really means.

The word, educate, comes from the Latin word educo, which means “to develop from within; to educe; to draw out; to grow through the law of use.” A powerful mind grows from obtaining organized knowledge, but it grows out through application and use! An example of this is; you might see someone have knowledge, say, they know the list of presidents and can recite them. They have knowledge, but it is knowledge without power. Because power of knowledge only comes when a person can organize that knowledge and put it into action, such as writing a logical paper about those presidents.

An educated person is someone who knows how to acquire what they want in life by obtaining knowledge, organizing it in ways that they then put into action to improve their life. So just having knowledge doesn’t actually make you educated. For example, a successful lawyer is not someone who just memorized case histories, he also learned to organize those case histories to then win cases for his clients.

At WHIZard Academy, we help students become educated. Our unique style of helping students, gives them knowledge, which all learning organizations do, but we take it a step further. We know that students are not truly educated until they have the ability to organize knowledge and then put it into action to achieve their goals. This is why our programs are all customized for each student. We focus in on the goals and help students take information and organize it and then use it to achieve their objectives. That is truly learning and helping students go from just having information, to being truly educated people! That’s why we say, at WHIZard Academy, we make tutoring work! Because it does with us. Give a call (952-224-2294) today to learn how to help your child become truly educated.

At a recent discussion I attended, I learned that around the country, 1 in 5 public school teacher with kids, send those kids to private schools. Imagine if 20% of the employees at a place you do business, did not actually buy anything from that business but went to the competitor instead. Would you not question the value you are getting?
